Bio

Greetings! My name is Walter DeRouen Jr. and I am a therapist with the Counseling and Psychological Services (CaPS) at RIT. I am also an embedded therapist with the College of Engineering.

I am a Rochester native, growing up and currently living in the 19th ward of the city. I am a graduate of the Greater Rochester Collaborative Social Work program through SUNY Brockport and Nazareth colleges. I earned my LCSW-R credentials working as a community mental health therapist with the University of Rochester and Rochester Regional Health systems. I have over over 15 years experience providing counseling and therapy  services to primarily young adult and adult populations.

I pursued social work as a second career after 20 years as a CNC machinist in the manufacturing sector. I was drawn into the helping field later in life because it aligned with my personal spiritual values which evolved and strengthened as I matured.

I identify as a heterosexual, Black male though I am biracial with African American and White parents. I am primary care giver to a parent in their 90's, a father, and a grandfather.

In my spare time I can be found riding my Harley, playing golf, volunteering in the spiritual / recovery communities, traveling (love Caribbean cruises) and spending time with my grandson.
