Connection is Prevention.
At Counseling and Psychological Services, we aim to work collaboratively across campus to achieve a mentally healthy university.
Counseling and Psychological Services expands its resources beyond the closed doors of our therapy offices to enhance student mental health and well-being campus-wide. By providing education and consultation opportunities to students, faculty, and staff, we broadly and holistically support the mental well-being of our RIT community.
Our services promote prevention, awareness, stigma reduction, help-seeking behavior, and the shared community role in supporting student mental health and well-being. We do this through the following:
Training Sessions
Presentations and training sessions on various topics that promote the mental well-being of our RIT community are available for faculty, staff, and student leaders upon request. Topics may include:
- Counseling and Psychological Services 101: An overview of CaPS services and how to get connected
- Falling Forward: How to bounce back from setbacks and build resilience
- Infusing Emotional Well-Being into the Classroom Culture: Support for faculty looking to embed holistic well-being in classroom contexts
- Logged In But Checked Out: An overview of gaming and social media addiction in college students
- Mental Health First Aid: Intensive 8-hour skills-based training course for RIT faculty, staff, and students who are interested in making their community healthier, happier, and safe
- Supporting Students in Distress: Guidance for faculty and staff in how to support students in times of emotional distress
- Trends in College Mental Health: An informative overview of national and RIT-specific trends in college student mental health
Signature Programs
Counseling and Psychological Services organizes several large programs aimed to promote mental health and well-being broadly to the community:
- National Suicide Prevention Week
A series of programs and events aimed to express deep care for our students through promoting awareness and prevention, educating the community, and promoting skills and connection.
- Mental Health Matters Fair
A supportive and engaging event to prioritize your mental health. Students can complete a free, confidential mental health screening and review results with a licensed counselor. The fair also features mental health resources, stress-relief activities, giveaways, and tabling by campus partners. This event promotes awareness, reduces stigma, and fosters a campus culture of mental well-being.
- Heritage Months and Belonging Weeks
CaPS supports campus-wide celebrations that honor the diverse identities and contributions of our community. Our involvement reflects CaPS' commitment to culturally responsive care and inclusive community support. In collaboration with the Division of Access, Engagement and Success, we participate in programming for:- Hispanic/Latine Heritage Month (Mid-September – Mid-October)
- Native/Indigenous Heritage Month (November)
- Black Heritage Month (February)
- Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi American Heritage Month (April)
- First-Generation College Student Week (Nov. 3-7)
- National Eating Disorder Awareness Week
This programming is dedicated to increasing understanding of eating disorders, challenging stigma, and promoting body acceptance and self-compassion. Events aim to educate the campus community, support students impacted by eating disorders, and create inclusive spaces for connection, healing, and hope.
- Sexual Assault Awareness Month: Day of Action
An event dedicated to supporting survivors and promoting a safer campus through education, awareness, and connection. This program aims to increase understanding, reduce stigma, encourage help-seeking, and empower students to take an active role in prevention and support.
