Midnight Waves, a band formed by RIT students last semester, were named overall winners of Friday’s Ovation: RIT Performing Arts Showcase with its Latin/jazz combo performance of “The Tiger of San Pedro.”

Rochester Institute of Technology will host the 2022 Baja SAE Collegiate Competition on June 2-5. Volunteers are needed for judging student design and on-track events taking place at the university and at Hogback Hill Motocross site in Palmyra, N.Y.

Forbes has identified a few of the RIT alumni set to define the next decade—and beyond. Two RIT alumni—and a third just a few months shy of the age cut-off—were named on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list for 2022. Jackie Wiley ’16 (game design and development) was honored in the Games category, and Dylan Ayrey ’15 (computer engineering) was named in the Enterprise Technology category.

As part of new faculty orientation, RIT’s College of Engineering Technology and Kate Gleason College of Engineering hosted a pilot workshop to introduce KEEN: Engineering Unleashed and its entrepreneurial mindset—a national initiative to advance engineering education.

The National Institutes of Health has awarded RIT the NIH Prize for Enhancing Faculty Gender Diversity in Biomedical and Behavioral Science. The prize went to 10 institutions that have acted to effect systemic change in gender diversity and equity among faculty members within their biomedical and behavioral science departments, centers, or divisions.

Five students in Duane Beck’s manufacturing engineering technology senior design class developed prototype equipment to improve an inspection process for circuit boards produced in RIT’s Center for Electronics Manufacturing and Assembly (CEMA).

Students in RIT’s College of Engineering Technology worked alongside faculty-researcher Brian Rice this semester on designing hardware in support of cryogenic inertial confinement fusion experiments. The work, part of a larger initiative with the University of Rochester, is helping to contribute to novel thermonuclear fusion technology solutions in the area of vibration control. 

Kamille Davis may have followed her brothers to RIT, but she is a leader in her own right. As the third in her family to graduate from the mechanical engineering technology program, Davis set her own pace early—excelling in classes, on the basketball court, in the laboratory, and in the community.

RIT Racing won first place overall at Baja SAE racing this past weekend in Tucson, Arizona, after a year of virtual competitions. Taking top five placements in the sled pull, suspension, maneuverability, and a top 20 placement in acceleration, the team placed second in the endurance race.

The RIT VEX U Robotics team placed third overall in its late March competition at the Purdue SIGBots Remote Skills Qualifier. It was the fourth event of the season and the team moved up to 12th among the 300 teams in the league that includes robots from the U.S., Canada, China, Puerto Rico, Morocco, Spain, and Mexico.

More than a dozen RIT alumni have tapped into the craft-beer boom that has swept across the country. In the past 12 years, the number of craft breweries has more than quadrupled.
