Language Placement Exam
If you studied a modern language in high school and plan to continue studying the same language at RIT, you must first take RIT's Language Placement (LP) before you can register for your first RIT course in the language.
Additionally, if you intend to enroll in American Sign Language (ASL) courses at RIT and have no prior experience, you must still complete the ASL placement form and indicate in the form that you have no prior experience. Please refer to the ASL placement form for further guidance.
Exams are given on an ongoing basis throughout the year. New incoming students can take the exam prior to beginning at RIT.
The level at which you will begin your language studies at RIT is determined by your LP results. You must start the sequence from the level determined by the LP, even if it is "Beginning I". Failure to do so may result in not being able to take a course in a modern language in the intended semester.
How to Take the Language Placement Exam:
- No later than three weeks before registration, begin the process of scheduling your Language Placement for the upcoming semester (allow four weeks during the summer).
- Initiate the process of signing up for your language exam by using the form or contacting the faculty in the listing below.
- To sign up for the exam, you will need to provide your name, RIT email address, RIT User ID number, and a brief overview of your previous experience with the language.
- The exam normally takes about an hour or less, and no special preparation is necessary. Some languages offer online format. Contact the faculty below for details.
- Await the exam results that determine your level. After the exam, you will receive an email notifying you about the language level at which you can enroll and begin at RIT.
- After your appropriate level has been noted by RIT in its registration system, you can proceed with registering for the course.
