Program Licensure/Certification Disclosures

Overview

Many professions and certifications are governed by state or territorial regulations. These regulations often dictate specific educational requirements for professional licensure or certification in that state or territory. For this reason, some programs offered by Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) that lead to professional licensure or certification in New York State may or may not meet the educational requirements of other states and territories.

In accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations Title 34 § 668.14 and § 668.43, RIT provides information below for programs that may lead to professional licensure or certification.

Architecture Licensure

Golisano Institute for Sustainability

Degree Program: Architecture M.Arch

Accreditor: National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB)

Determination of whether program meets the educational requirements for professional licensure eligibility:

  • MEETS: All fifty states and the following U.S. Territories: Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands

  • NOT DETERMINED: American Samoa (no published licensure requirements are available)

Architecture licensing requires a professional degree, internship, and successful completion of all divisions of the Architect Registration Exam (ARE). Successful completion of approximately 3 years (3740 hours) of internship (now referred to as the Architectural Experience Program (AxP) is also necessary. Both the ARE and AxP are administered by the National Council of Architectural Registration Board (NCARB).

Occupational Therapy Licensure

College of Health Sciences and Technology

Degree Program: Occupational Therapy OTD

Candidate for Accreditation: Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE)

Determination of whether program meets the educational requirements for professional licensure eligibility:

  • MEETS: All fifty states, with clarifications:
    • Where differences in requirements exist, they are limited to state-specific fieldwork duration expectations or legacy terminology regarding accreditation, both of which are addressed through disclosure and documentation rather than curricular change.
    • With respect to supervised fieldwork, the OTD program establishes a minimum fieldwork requirement consistent with ACOTE accreditation standards and sufficient to meet educational requirements for licensure in New York State. However, state licensure statutes vary in how they specify supervised fieldwork (e.g., hours, weeks, or months), and a small number of states require a longer duration than the RIT program’s baseline minimum. When students complete fieldwork in another state, the program works with the student and the fieldwork site to ensure that documentation of supervised fieldwork hours meets the educational requirements applicable in the state where the student intends to seek licensure. Any additional hours required in these cases are driven by state licensure expectations and do not represent a change to the academic curriculum.
    • A small number of states use legacy statutory language when referencing accrediting bodies (e.g., references to AOTA or other predecessor organizations). These references are understood by state licensing authorities to refer to the current nationally recognized accrediting body for occupational therapy education, the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE). We have not identified any states where outdated statutory terminology results in the program failing to meet educational requirements for licensure eligibility.

Professional Licensure Information
Graduates must pass the certification examination administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). Successful completion of this examination results in national certification as an entry-level occupational therapist, which is required for licensure in all U.S. jurisdictions. Graduates must then apply for licensure in the state(s) where they intend to practice.

Physician Assistant Licensure

NTID has a long history of preparing teachers of the deaf for careers throughout the United States. Due to the wide variation in state requirements, reciprocity rules, application processes, and individual student academic histories, the pathways to licensure in each of the states and territories vary due to local laws and regulations. As part of our program’s design, we have significant expertise in working with students to help them to meet the licensure requirements for the location where they wish to become employed. We support all students in navigating the locality-specific requirements and timelines for jurisdictions across the country.

Our determination that the MS in Deaf Education does or does not meet the licensure or certification expectations of each U.S. state or territory is based on our understanding of the current published requirements as well as our past and ongoing efforts to support students in satisfying these regulations for each location. As state and territory regulations change, so can the pathways to teacher licensure. Although we strongly recommend that our program completers earn New York State licensure so that they can transfer it to another state via reciprocity, other pathways may be available. Students and prospective students should contact our Program Coordinator to discuss the current pathway to teacher licensure in a specific jurisdiction.

In most states, the simplest pathway to attain licensure after completing a preparation program out of state is through an application for interstate licensure reciprocity. As a result, we strongly recommend that you receive New York State Education Department (NYSED) certification prior to applying for the equivalent license or certification in another state. Please contact the Program Director for additional information and insights into licensure requirements in states other than New York.
