Pedestrian and Rider Safety

Keep RIT safe, no matter how you move.

Whether you move on foot, use a mobility device*, or ride a bike, scooter, or skateboard, we all play a role in keeping our community safe, respectful, and accessible. Kindness is the best travel companion.

The Quarter Mile is a pedestrian/mobility device-priority zone

Bikes, scooters, skateboards, and carts are not permitted from Monday to Friday, 7 a.m.–7 p.m. Failure to follow these guidelines may result in corrective action. For more details, see the University Policy C14.0.

*Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a pedestrian mobility device refers to any device used by individuals with mobility disabilities for locomotion, and it includes both wheelchairs and other power-driven mobility devices (OPDMDs). The ADA requires that individuals with disabilities be allowed to use these devices in areas open to pedestrian traffic, with limited exceptions for safety reasons.

Alternative Pathways for Riders

To help riders navigate campus safely, RIT encourages these routes:

  • Andrews Memorial Drive Loop: A main road that circles campus and connects to most academic buildings.

  • Northern and Southern Campus Paths: These roads run alongside Andrews Drive and are usually less crowded, making your trip smoother.

  • Paths behind Slaughter Hall and Sustainability Institute.

Key Safety Guidelines

Stay Alert and Aware

  • Keep your head up and your phone down.

  • Keep your music at a low volume so you can hear what’s happening around you.

  • Pay attention to your surroundings at all times.

Share the Space

  • Pedestrians always have the right of way.

  • Stay to the right.

  • Announce yourself when passing. Use a bell, call out “passing on your left” or make eye contact.

  • Some community members may not hear you coming, especially those who are Deaf or hard of hearing, so always ride cautiously, stay visible, and never assume someone knows you’re approaching.

Pedestrians, whether on foot or using a mobility device, are always permitted on all campus paths at any time.
