About the SHED
The Heart of Campus Innovation
The Student Hall for Exploration and Development (SHED) opened in Fall 2023 as a transformational addition to the Rochester Institute of Technology campus. Spanning more than 200,000 square feet of combined new construction and renovated space, the SHED connects Wallace Library, Monroe Hall, and the surrounding campus through collaborative learning environments designed for a new generation of makers, performers, and active learners.
The SHED was envisioned as a place where students from all disciplines could come together to explore ideas beyond the boundaries of a single major or classroom. By combining making, performing arts, project collaboration, instruction, and informal gathering spaces, the building creates opportunities for interdisciplinary learning and innovation.
Today, the SHED supports thousands of students each day through makerspaces, classrooms, performing arts studios, team spaces, events, and exhibitions. The facility reflects RIT’s commitment to experiential learning and provides a highly visible home for creativity, collaboration, and discovery.
