Makerspaces

The SHED Makerspaces provide students, faculty, and staff with access to advanced fabrication tools, collaborative workspaces, and hands-on learning opportunities.

The makerspaces support interdisciplinary making across engineering, design, art, technology, textiles, fabrication, electronics, prototyping, and creative experimentation.

Spaces throughout the SHED include woodworking, metalworking, electronics, textiles, digital fabrication, laser cutting, 3D printing, and collaborative project development areas.

Many makerspace resources are available to all RIT students following completion of required safety training and certifications.

SHED Makerspace Creativity Grant

The SHED Makerspace Creativity Grant awards individuals and teams up to $500 in the first round of funding and up to $1,500 for the second round. The funds are to be used to help bring projects to life! Awards will be granted in the Fall and Spring semesters with between 7 and 10 awards being given out each semester.

This program is open to all students at RIT who are interested in solving a problem, creative expression or have an idea for a new product.

Funds can be used for tools, materials and other commercial off-the-shelf items to help you create and experiment.

  • Submit your application
  • If selected, you will be required to attend a workshop hosted by the Makerspace.
  • Training in the area that will support building your creation.
  • Showcase and poster presentation near the end of the semester in the Bowers Maker Showcase to share with the RIT community what you have worked on.

Creating can be difficult, having a team is always better.

Multi-disciplinary teams are great; work with your friends from across campus.

Solving problems or expressions centered around community problems, sustainability, the environment and accessibility.

General Makerspace

The General Makerspace is a flexible project development area designed to support a wide range of hands-on creative and technical work. Located on the first floor of the SHED, the space supports interdisciplinary making through activities such as prototyping, assembly, crafting, collaborative design work, laser cutting, 3D printing, and experimentation across multiple disciplines.

The space includes the SHED’s primary self-serve 3D print lab, laser cutters, open work areas with hand tools, and the Maker Classroom computer lab equipped with design software and digital fabrication resources. Work areas are designed to support both individual and team-based projects while fostering creativity, innovation, and problem-solving in an accessible, collaborative environment. Certain equipment and specialized fabrication tools may require training, staff support, or advance coordination prior to use.

Textiles and Electronics Makerspace

The Textiles and Electronics Makerspace combines traditional techniques with modern technology, offering an interdisciplinary environment for sewing, wearable technology, soft circuitry, electronics prototyping, and creative experimentation. Located on the second floor of the SHED, the space supports projects where design, engineering, and creative practice intersect.

Available resources include sewing and embroidery machines, sergers, vinyl cutters, soldering stations, electronics benches, oscilloscopes, power supplies, and collaborative worktables designed to support both beginner and advanced makers. The space also provides access to basic electrical components and specialized textiles equipment to support coursework, personal projects, workshops, and innovation-focused programming. Certain equipment requires completion of online training modules and in-person competency checks prior to use.

A-Level Open Makerspace

The A-Level Open Makerspace is home to many of the SHED Makerspace’s advanced fabrication resources and large-scale project capabilities. Located within the Atrium Makerspace, the space supports hands-on making across woodworking, metalworking, advanced digital fabrication, finishing, and prototyping processes in a collaborative open-workshop environment.

Resources within the space include industrial 3D printing, wood and metal shops, CNC equipment, welding stations, paint and finishing areas, hand and power tools, and large open workspaces for fabrication and assembly. Designed to support interdisciplinary innovation and experiential learning, the A-Level Open Makerspace accommodates both individual and collaborative projects varying from rapid prototyping to advanced fabrication workflows. Access to specialized equipment may require safety training, certifications, or staff supervision prior to use.
