Maya Angelou’s rescheduled visit to Rochester Institute of Technology on Tuesday, April 30, has been canceled due to the recent hospitalization of the renowned poet and author.

RIT’s Division for Diversity & Inclusion and its partners apologize for any inconvenience caused by the cancellation, says spokeswoman Morgan Martins. Campus officials plan to contact all registrants with the cancellation notice.

At this time, there are no plans to reschedule the event, “An Evening with Maya Angelou.” There will be officials on campus Tuesday to redirect those who did not learn of the cancellation.

“We hope that Dr. Angelou is feeling better and continues on the road to recovery. On behalf of Rochester, we send her our well wishes,” Martins adds.

Angelou turned 85 on April 4. She has had limited travel and speaking engagements in the past several years. The poet, artist, educator and advocate has published numerous books of autobiographical works, written and produced plays, won three Grammy awards and presented poetry for presidents. In 2011, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, by President Barack Obama.
