GRDE-102
Typography I
3 Credits
This course is an introduction to the fundamental principles of typography (the visual representation of language) to effectively convey information and ideas to specific audiences. Focus is on the communicative function and aesthetic nature of typographic problem-solving. Course content and lectures will cover typographic terminology, type anatomy, history of typography, as well as type classification, type measurement, and issues of legibility and readability. Once students are introduced to the fundamentals of typography, they will include imagery as appropriate. Students will also refine their skills using relevant software.

History of Graphic Design
3 Credits
This course will focus on the development of graphic communication from prehistory through the present. This course will provide students with knowledge and understanding of the places, people, events; historical and cultural factors; and technological innovations that have influenced the practice of graphic design. Lectures are complemented by guest speakers, archive visits, videos, research projects, critical writing and discussion.

Interactive Design II
3 Credits
This course builds on prior experience in interactive design, development, and graphic design. Students will apply user-centered design methodologies to plan and implement interactive instructional projects across multiple devices and platforms. Emphasis is placed on thoroughly understanding the user experience to inform effective interface design. Throughout the course, students will work with real content and engage with contemporary sociocultural issues as they define information architecture and develop interactive solutions. Current and emerging UI design patterns and trends will be examined and applied in alignment with industry best practices.

Branding Systems
3 Credits
This course provides an in-depth overview of processes, theories, design methods, and advanced strategies for branding and systems design. Course content includes positioning, touchpoints, research, and management practices used to develop comprehensive design systems. Students will examine case studies to understand historical context while also exploring current and emerging trends in branding and systems design. At the completion of this course, students will be able to develop brand identities, brand strategies, and integrated design systems.
GRDE-322
Women Pioneers in Design
3 Credits
This course will center on the contributions made by Modernist women designers. Emphasis will be placed on their unheralded pioneering efforts. Exemplars from the field will be presented, set in a historical context. Lectures are complemented by guest speakers, videos, participatory exercises, discussion, and critical essay writing.
