Bio

Randy Fernando is a designer, educator, and researcher whose work explores the intersection of design, computation, digital fabrication, and emerging technologies. His teaching and creative practice investigate how new modes of making—from parametric design and robotic fabrication to artificial intelligence and immersive technologies—can expand the ways designers imagine, represent, and construct the built environment.

Fernando is the Creative Director of MOV.E, a multidisciplinary design and research practice focused on experimental fabrication, public art, adaptive reuse, and community-engaged design. His work often moves between digital and physical processes, using computation, material experimentation, and advanced fabrication to translate complex ideas into built artifacts and spatial experiences.

As an educator, Fernando emphasizes learning through experimentation and making, encouraging students to critically engage emerging technologies while developing their own design methodologies and authorship. His research and teaching interests include computational design, digital and robotic fabrication, artificial intelligence in design education, immersive visualization, material systems, and the adaptive reuse of existing environments.

3 Credits
This course introduces advanced methods of interior design communication and architectural graphic standards using 3D modeling software. Students will explore the full graphic sequence from pre-design to basic contract documents, develop accurate 2D and 3D representations of interior and exterior environments, and apply professional standards for drawings. Emphasis is placed on integrating computer-aided drafting tools with post-production techniques. By the end of the course, students will understand the drawing process, apply rendering and visualization strategies to create compelling presentation drawings, and produce an introductory set of coordinated documentation drawings that effectively convey design intent.

This course will introduce students to the components of building construction and environmental control systems with consideration of the building envelope as the primary control system for function and human comfort. An overview of building construction types will include light frame, heavy steel, concrete, and masonry as well as key components and subsystems for egress, vertical circulation, fire control, habitation, environmental controls, and comfort. Students will develop an understanding of sustainability, site conditions, construction processes and components, and code considerations for professional practice.

The course will introduce students to materials and specifications for interior design. Students will learn how to select, specify, and apply appropriate materials, finishes and furnishings for interior design projects. Selections will be based on performance, testing, code, sustainability, accessibility, indoor air quality, ergonomics, human health, and safety. At the completion of this course, students will understand the role of materials in supporting design intent, human experience, code requirements, the specification process as part of a contract document set, and the value of lifelong learning in relationship to evolving materials, products, and fabrication technologies.

Interior Design Independent Study will provide students with the ability to study in a specialized area with an individual faculty member. Students, with the assistance of a faculty adviser, will propose a course of study. Independent study students must obtain permission of an instructor and complete the Independent Study Permission Form to enroll.
