2019 Distinguished Alumni Awards: Theresa Fitzgerald

The Distinguished Alumni Awards are presented annually by each of RIT’s nine colleges and the School of Individualized Study to an alumnus/a who has performed at the highest levels of his or her profession or who has contributed to the advancement and leadership of civic, philanthropic or service organizations. It is the highest award an RIT college can bestow upon its alumni. The 2019 recipients will be honored on Oct. 18.

What is your favorite RIT memory?

“The design process required more art supplies, it was not a tidy laptop, to work at any location. At the design school, we each had lockers and desks where most of our art supplies stayed. It was a place where most work was done. Plus, it was not easy to walk the Quarter Mile in a snow storm with a large portfolio and tackle box full of art supplies. My favorite memory is working alone and together in the studio. We spent many hours, day and night, week and weekends, with the class. Together we worked on projects and grew into designers and lifelong friends.”

How did RIT help prepare you for success?

“At RIT, I learned a rigorous design process and discipline of refining my craft. With my design education, I developed my personal aesthetic, combining principles of Bauhaus and the modern movement to the children’s market, often not regarded for good design.”
