'Bubble Boy' photo series reinforces self-isolation in fun way

George Kamper's "Bubble Boy" project has some Easter flavor.

George Kamper ’77 (Professional Photography) is using his creativity to try and put smiles on faces during a difficult time.

He and his wife Sherryl produced the “Bubble Boy” photography series for his website and social media channels. The whimsical images feature George and Sherryl engaging in activities around their house, with George inside a protective, large bubble. They represent a fun approach to reinforcing the importance of self-isolation during the coronavirus pandemic.

“Our main goal was to create something fun that we could share with friends and hopefully illicit a smile,” George said.

“Bubble Boy” is a two-person operation. George controls the camera remotely inside the bubble while Sherryl executes most of the propping, styling and art directing from outside the bubble.

While George said many have thought the bubble was a product of Photoshop, he actually bought it for a planned lifestyle and fashion shoot. Once COVID-19 began to spread, he brainstormed how to repurpose the purchase.

“As an advertising photographer, I need to keep coming up with fresh ideas and work,” George said. “I literally woke up in the middle of the night and started thinking of ideas on how I could be inspired by the coronavirus pandemic rather than becoming totally depressed by it.”

Ultimately, George decided to visually present the idea that “it feels like we are literally living in a bubble.”

Beyond this project, George’s distinguished career includes photographing subjects around the world. His client list ranges from Fortune 500 companies to celebrities and athletes (such as Cedella Marley, Martha Stewart and Dwayne Wade) and more.
