Cary Award winner from HP Inc. spends day at RIT
Stephen Nigro presents to a full crowd on April 3 at Rochester Institute of Technology.
The Melbert B. Cary Jr. Distinguished Professor in Rochester Institute of Technology’s School of Media Sciences routinely presents the prestigious Melbert B. Cary Jr. Award to someone who is making tremendous steps forward in the graphic arts industry.
The current Melbert. B. Cary Jr. Distinguished Professor is Shu Chang, who gave the 2018 award to Stephen Nigro, president of HP Inc.’s 3D printing business, on April 3. Chang said she felt that Nigro “represents all of the high standards recognized by the Melbert B. Cary Jr. Award.”
Nigro’s work propelling HP’s 3D print business to the top made him an obvious candidate for the award. In the past, recipients have been involved with more traditional print practices. Chang said it was important to recognize the other types of printing technology shaping the graphic arts industries.
For part of his visit to RIT, Nigro toured many facilities, including the Next Print and Discover labs within the School of Media Sciences. The Next Print Lab is dedicated to 3D printing technologies, allowing students to gain hands-on experience and collaborate with students in other programs. The Discover Lab houses our HP Sprout and encourages student and faculty-led research.
A team of students working with HP Sprout also prepared a presentation for Nigro about what they have been working on. The students were able to show Nigro how they are using HP’s technologies in new and creative ways and keeping their skills relevant and at the forefront of the industry.
Later in the day, Nigro gave a talk alongside David Woodlock, who works in market development in HP’s 3D printing business. They explained how HP is using 3D print technologies to change how the world designs and manufactures.
Nigro spoke on he brought his 2D print expertise to the 3D print market, and how that, coupled with HP’s new technologies, will propel HP, and the world, into the future. He spoke on the benefits of HP’s Jet Fusion technologies and how they can be of use to companies and universities alike.
