Five students in Duane Beck’s manufacturing engineering technology senior design class developed prototype equipment to improve an inspection process for circuit boards produced in RIT’s Center for Electronics Manufacturing and Assembly (CEMA).

The RIT VEX U Robotics team placed third overall in its late March competition at the Purdue SIGBots Remote Skills Qualifier. It was the fourth event of the season and the team moved up to 12th among the 300 teams in the league that includes robots from the U.S., Canada, China, Puerto Rico, Morocco, Spain, and Mexico.

Analytical thinking, complex problem solving, creativity, resiliency, and flexibility are among the top skills needed for emerging careers by 2025. Anticipating these rapid changes in the workplace—further accelerated by lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic—RIT is seizing on the opportunity to guide students to “new economy majors” that are multi­disciplinary, transformative, and future-focused.

RIT’s newest Frederick H. Minett Professor is an engaged alumnus, successful professional in the manufacturing industry, and highly active community volunteer. Orlando Ortiz ’04 (manufacturing engineering technology), ’08 (MBA) is the 29th person appointed to the prestigious position, established in 1991.

Mahany Welding Supply donated two gas metal arc welding cells and two gas tungsten arc welding cells to be used within an advanced manufacturing degree program in RIT’s College of Engineering Technology to provide needed workforce skills.

Rochester Institute of Technology students and faculty from various disciplines put their creative problem-solving skills to good use earlier this month. Working collaboratively, they examined challenges faced by client organizations and then presented conceptual solutions to them during a two-day event.

Manufacturing Day provides current students and local guidance counselors with important information about regional automotive, computer, plastics and electronics manufacturing opportunities and the coursework necessary to be successful in these fields.

RIT’s three sleek Formula racecars, Baja off-road vehicle, Hot Wheelz hybrid electric Formula car and EVO, the electric motorcycle, all built by RIT students, will be unveiled as part of the Imagine RIT festival on May 6.
