Stimulating Innovation for Smart Cities: Japan’s Experience and Global Implications

Smart cities are one of the key areas that will make a significant contribution towards sustainability. They are based on advanced systems of hardware and software for mutual exchanges of energy and information. Collaboration with various stakeholders in education, industry, and government is necessary for these cities to achieve an effective integration of science and technology; therefore, innovation systems of smart cities exhibit a significant degree of diversity in knowledge, actors, and institutions. This talk will examine the innovation system of smart cities in Japan and its implications for system transformation towards sustainability. Primary topics of discussion will include smart city integrations of renewable energy, energy storage, community energy management, and applications for home appliances and electric vehicles.

Speaker: Masaru Yarime, Associate Professor, School of Energy and Environment, City University of Hong Kong

Before teaching for the City University of Hong Kong, Masaru Yarime was previously Project Associate Professor of Science, Technology, and Innovation Governance (STIG) at the Graduate School of Public Policy in the University of Tokyo, where he is currently Visiting Research Fellow. He also has appointments as Honorary Reader at the Department of Science, Technology, Engineering and Public Policy (STEaPP) in University College London and Visiting Scholar at the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Research Institute. His research interests focus on public policy, corporate strategy, and institutional design for science, technology, and innovation for sustainability. He is particularly interested in exploring the structure, functions, and evolution of knowledge systems involving various stakeholders in society. He received B.Eng. and M.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Tokyo and the California Institute of Technology, respectively, and Ph.D. in Economics and Policy Studies of Technological Change from Maastricht University in the Netherlands. His previous working experience includes Senior Research Fellow at the National Institute of Science and Technology Policy in the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology.
