KIT (Kanazawa Institute of Technology) Summer Program in Japanese is a five-week summer study abroad program designed to give participants a rich experience in improving Japanese communication skills and understanding of Japanese culture and society. You'll participate in cultural programs, field trips, develop projects, attend lectures, and participate in daily classroom activities.

  • Earn 8 credits, taking Japanese language and culture classes.
  • Experience Japanese culture and society.
  • Study with students from other U.S. universities and get to know local Japanese students through many activities.
  • All levels of Japanese language may apply.
  • Significant scholarship funding is available (see more details below)

Courses:

  • Japanese Language I, II, or III (4 credits)
    These courses offer lessons in Japanese conversation, reading, and writing at two levels. The focus of study is the application of the already acquired knowledge in Japanese to real situations. You will take a placement test before starting the program to determine your language level.
     
  • Japanese Studies Seminar (4 credits)
    Participants learn about Japanese culture and society, which is reflected in the Japanese language, through lectures, discussions, and a variety of off-campus field trips and tours. Various activities are offered to meet people and learn about the way of life in Japan.

Courses can count towards a minor or immersion in Japanese.

Application deadline extended to: December 5, 2025
The application requires an essay and a letter of recommendation. 

Eligibility:

  • The program is open to all undergraduate year levels, all majors, all Japanese language levels (even beginner), and a 3.0 cumulative GPA or above (applicants below a 3.0 GPA will be considered on a case-by-case basis). No course pre-reqs.
  • Strong essays, recommendations, and grades of B or higher in language courses will strengthen your application.

Program Cost & Financial Aid

Scholarship Funding for the KIT Summer Japanese Language Program:

  • Up to five highly qualified students will be selected for a fully funded experience. These students will not pay any tuition or program fee (housing) and will only be responsible for personal out-of-pocket costs such as flights and meals.
  • Even if not selected for the full funding, the program is an incredible value, with students only paying $1,500 for tuition and housing.

Financial Aid:
Financial aid may cover some program costs. As you review the budget worksheet, please remember that it does not include your RIT financial aid or scholarships, which may cover some of the program costs. The purpose of the budget worksheet is to show all the costs associated with your study abroad progra,m which will help your RIT Financial Aid Assistant Director determine how your aid and scholarships may be applied. 

To understand how your financial aid and scholarships may apply to your program costs:

  • Make an appointment with your financial aid assistant director (call Financial Aid at 585-475-2186) and mention that you are calling for a study abroad appointment
  • Upload a copy of your budget worksheet(s) via the Financial Aid upload portal at https://join.rit.edu/register/FA_upload (at least 48 hours prior to your scheduled meeting, so they have time to prepare) 
    • Please rename the file name of your budget worksheet before uploading it to the Financial Aid portal based on the instructions provided in the portal (adding your name and student ID)

We recommend you meet with Financial Aid before the application deadline so you understand how your aid will apply. The RIT financial aid office is located in Bausch and Lomb Center (Bldg. 77), 2nd floor, 2125.

Additional Scholarships:

  • RIT Education Abroad Travel Grants ($500-$1,000)
    All students with pending applications in the RIT Study Abroad Compass for this program will be automatically considered for an RIT Education Abroad Travel Grant. You will be informed of your scholarship status shortly after the application deadline. Scholarships are awarded based on financial need.

  • Additional Scholarships
    RIT scholarships and national scholarships for study abroad are good options to explore for scholarship funding. Make sure you are checking scholarship eligibility requirements and take note of scholarship deadlines.

1) Attend one of the student info. meetings listed above. If you cannot attend an info. meeting, you can make an individual advising appointment with study abroad advisor, Myles Chalue - choose appt. date/time

2) Start an application in the RIT Compass
Once you login to the Compass you will need to complete some profile/registration questions, then use the “Search Programs” tab to search for “KIT Summer Program” to complete an application.
