Rome: Examining Art and Design in the Eternal City (Faculty-Led Program)

Examine art, design, architecture, urban spaces, and archaeological sites that are relevant to the history and culture of Rome. For centuries, Rome's sites have directly influenced architecture and visual culture. From Raphael to Michelangelo, artists have visited Rome and studied its structures, monuments, and traditions. The city was seen as a museum, and treated as such by scholars and pilgrims alike. You'll learn about the formation and development of public spaces and explore areas that are less frequently visited including an underground basilica and ancient Mithraic temple. You'll experience Rome's distinct neighborhoods, local cuisine, and participate in market culture.

Note: the application deadline for this program has passed. Email global@rit.edu to inquire about next year's program.

Program Highlights:

  • Learn representational techniques for documenting aspects of place through sketching, collage, writing, and comparative analysis.
  • Visit all major sites from Ancient and Medieval Rome, the Renaissance, and the Baroque
  • A day trip to Orvieto will give you the opportunity to see the typical organization of a smaller town, its relationship to the landscape, and its unique double spiral well.
