Business students, alumni join learning marathon

Saunders College of Business is helping to educate children at Clara Barton School No. 2 about business, economics and free enterprise on Friday.

Saunders College of Business will go “elementary” at Clara Barton School No. 2 on Friday, May 8.

The business college at Rochester Institute of Technology and Junior Achievement of Rochester are teaming up with the Rochester City School District for the 10th annual all-day learning marathon to educate school children K-6 about business, economics and free enterprise. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the elementary school, located at 190 Reynolds St.

Close to 50 volunteers, including RIT students and alumni along with other professionals from the business community, will lead the Junior Achievement classes that vary by grade level. Peter Rosenthal, senior associate director of student services at Saunders College, said the initiative has been an unforgettable and rewarding classroom experience for children, volunteers and teachers during the past decade. “From the first day of this program 10 years ago, we took a multi-faceted approach,” said Rosenthal.

“Not only is it never too early to start introducing business and economics concepts to children, but the potential impacts of bringing together a college business student with a working professional to co-teach in each classroom are long-lasting. Both domestic and international RIT students participate each year, and everyone benefits in this diverse and cross-generational context.”
