A team of Rochester Institute of Technology cybersecurity students competed in the 2022 Northeast Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (NECCDC) March 18-20.

A team of RIT cybersecurity students is moving on to the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (NCCDC), after taking first place at the regional competition March 19–21. The annual event is part of the nation’s largest college-level cyber defense competition.

RIT had its best year ever for sponsored research funding. For fiscal year 2020, which ended June 30, RIT received 382 new awards totaling $82 million. The record funding follows almost $58 million in research expenditures in fiscal year 2019, also a record.

Cybercrime is costing the world trillions of dollars, and analysts say that there aren’t enough qualified professionals to prevent those attacks. To address this problem, RIT is creating the Global Cybersecurity Institute (GCI), aimed at meeting the demand for computing security and artificial intelligence professionals, while developing future technologies, protocols and human understanding needed to address the global cybersecurity crisis.

RIT will use a $5.5 million federal grant to grow a program that trains the next generation of cybersecurity professionals who will help secure the nation. The National Science Foundation awarded RIT the five-year grant that will renew funding for the CyberCorps: Scholars for Service program.

RIT’s cyber defense team took home third place at the 2019 National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition, held April 23-25 in Orlando.
