    Kelly Wu, a computing and information sciences Ph.D. student, and Matthew Wright, chair of the Department of Cybersecurity, participated in the Laboratory for Analytic Sciences (LAS) Research Symposium, held Dec. 6 at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, N.C. The team collaborated with LAS on a tool that helps analysts detect deepfakes.

    Jessica Bayliss, professor of interactive games and media, had her paper “The Data-Oriented Design Process for Game Development” from IEEE’s Computer magazine named a runner-up for the 2022 Best Paper Award by the IEEE Computer Society Publications Board.

    Rob Olson, senior lecturer in the Department of Cybersecurity, was a featured panelist at the Recruiting for Cybersecurity Programs forum Nov. 16, hosted by The Chronicle of Higher Education. Experts discussed how colleges can best recruit both students and instructors to the growing field of cybersecurity. The virtual forum is available online.

    Matthew Wright, chair of the Department of Cybersecurity, was invited by the U.S. Department of State to speak at the Elections and Cybersecurity Workshop: Protecting Indonesia’s Elections in 2024 and Beyond, in Bali. Wright presented on “Mis-, Dis-, and Malinformation (MDM) Handling Management in U.S. Elections,” together with Kate Starbird, associate professor at University of Washington.

    Two RIT teams participated in the 11th International Conference on Affective Computing and Intelligent Interaction (ACII 2023), held Sept. 10-13 at the MIT Media Lab. Anisha Ashwath ’23 MS (computer science) and Michael Peechatt ’13 (software engineering), ’21 MS (computer science), a computing and information sciences Ph.D. student, authored the paper “Early vs. Late Multimodal Fusion for Recognizing Confusion in Collaborative Tasks” with Cecilia Alm, professor in the Department of Psychology, and Reynold Bailey, professor in the Department of Computer Science. Jordan Quinn, a computer science student, presented a demo on “MDE – Multimodal Data Explorer for Flexible Visualization of Multiple Data Streams.” Team members included Isabelle Arthur, a computer science student; Rajesh Titung, a computing and information sciences Ph.D. student; Alm; and Bailey.

    Nidhi Rastogi, assistant professor in the Department of Software Engineering, has recently been named as an Aspen Tech Policy Hub Fellow. Representing RIT’s ESL Global Cybersecurity Institute, she spent three weeks in San Francisco in July 2023, gaining insights into creating impactful AI policy.

    Donna Burnette, executive director; Brit Milazzo, digital marketing and communications manager; and Heather Storti, assistant director, AEOP Apprenticeships and Career Development, all in the K-12 University Center, organized and hosted the 2023 STEM Summer Speaker Series for more than 450 apprentices and fellows participating in Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP) research this summer. The eight-session virtual series focused on STEM career pathways and highlighted Army-sponsored STEM research. David Schwartz, director of the School of Interactive Games and Media; Emily Nack ’22 (game design and development), IT specialist at the Army Cyber Institute; and Julia O'Gorman, third-year mechanical engineering student and SMART scholar, were featured presenters.

    An interdisciplinary team presented “Music, Motion, and Mixed Reality: An Interdisciplinary, Problem-Based Educational Experience” at the SIGGRAPH 2023 Educator’s Forum on Aug. 9 in Los Angeles. Team members are Joe Geigel, professor in the Department of Computer Science; Thomas Warfield, director of dance; Yunn-Shan Ma, assistant professor in the School of Performing Arts; Shaun Foster, professor in the School of Design; and Dan Roach of DJR Design. The talk described collaborative educational experiences created during the Fall 2022 semester involving computation, design, art, and music.

    Jonathan S. Weissman, senior lecturer of cybersecurity, was keynote speaker on the future of AI and cybersecurity on June 29 at TEACHfest Plenary, the summer professional development program for Brighton Central School District teachers. Weissman spoke about AI’s effects on education and cybersecurity, including ways that AI can disrupt K-12 education.
