Career Counseling

Our career counselors are here to support your academic and professional success. No matter your field of study or major, we can provide you with information on what it takes to succeed in your chosen career. Whether you are seeking to change your major, or to pick a minor or concentration, we are available to assist you.

What is Career Counseling?

  • A place to explore factors that contribute to career choice including interests, abilities, personality, and values.
  • You and your counselor will collaborate to generate ideas for majors and/or career path options.
  • You can expect to review written and on-line resources to help you make a satisfying decision.
  • Career counseling may include referral to on campus resources to support your academic success.
  • Call 585-475-2301 to set up your initial career counseling appointment or log in to RIT Handshake to view open appointment times.

Career Counseling is an excellent way to address issues such as:

What are my talents?
What do I love to do?
What careers match my interests?
Which major is best for me?
What can I do with my major?
How can I make a difference in the world?

Can I take a test that will tell me what to do?

We offer vocational assessment, which can help generate ideas and suggest occupations that are well-suited for your personality and interests.

If you and your counselor agree that vocational assessment would be helpful, you will schedule an appointment for the test administration and another to review the results with your counselor.

What career resources are available?

We have resources available to all students, even if they are not working with a counselor.

What group experiences are available?

Thinking of Changing Your major?

Students are invited to attend a multi-session workshop presented by the Office of Career Services and Cooperative Education. Workshop topics include: career assessment and interpretation, and information about majors and careers you are interested in. Free to RIT students.

Attendance at all four sessions is requested.  Dates for the Thinking of Changing Your Major workshop are listed in Handshake. login to Handshake and go to Events.
