RIT students experience global learning with international fellowships
Students will study in Japan, Germany, Italy, France, Poland, Denmark, and Canada
RIT students continue to broaden their educational opportunities by studying abroad with help from international fellowships.
“One of the hallmarks of an RIT education is the opportunity to send so many students out into the world to live, learn, and explore,” said Jenny Sullivan, director of Education Abroad and International Fellowships. “Thanks to these nationally competitive fellowships and scholarships, our students are using their skills and talents to make a difference in the global community. They are learning other languages, building relationships with locals, and exploring other values and perspectives related to their disciplines. These experiences provide benefits that extend far beyond classroom measurements.”
The DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) Research Internships in Science and Engineering provide fully funded summer opportunities in Germany for undergraduate students to gain practical research experience. Students are paired with a German university and a German Ph.D. student on research projects in the fields of science and engineering. This year’s DAAD Rise scholars are Christos Papaventsis, a computer science major from Panorama, Greece; and Aman Patel, a cybersecurity major from Ithaca, N.Y.
The DAAD Rise Professional scholarship provides fully funded summer research internships in Germany for graduate students in the fields of biology, chemistry, computer science, physics, earth science, or engineering. This year’s recipients are Bhople Siddharth, a computer science major from Indore, India; and Nijim John Hanna, an imaging science major from Toledo, Ohio.
The Fund for Education Abroad Scholarship provides ongoing support to students with financial need who face barriers to participation in education abroad. Irwin Cano, a biotechnology and molecular bioscience major from Los Angeles, Calif., will be studying in Copenhagen, Denmark; and Yasmin Ramos, an interior design major from Astoria, N.Y., will be studying in Milan, Italy.
The Fulbright Canada-Mitacs Globalink Research Internship program gives U.S. students the chance to be part of a 10- to 12-week research summer internship under the supervision of Canadian university faculty members in a variety of academic disciplines from science, engineering, and mathematics, to the humanities and social sciences. This year’s recipients are Grayson Manzino, a chemical engineering major from Dayton, N.J.; and Lumi Poysa, a human-centered computing major from Macedon, N.Y.
The UPWARDS Japan scholarship, intended to promote semiconductor research, was awarded to Ahmed Yesuf, a mechanical engineering major from Rochester, N.Y.; Amberle Nirai and Sana Nirai, both microelectronic engineering majors from Rochester, N.Y.; Dean Bartels, a materials science and engineering major from Upper Black Eddy, Pa.; Lucas Newquist, a microelectronic engineering major from Easton, Pa.; Destinye Yamada, an electrical engineering major from Sterling, Va.; and Sami Znati, a microsystems engineering student from College Park, Md.
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, provided by the U.S. Department of State, enables students to study or intern abroad while gaining proficiency in diverse languages and cultures. The program encourages students to conduct STEM-related research abroad as part of their study abroad or international internship program. This year’s recipients are Malena Juif, a packaging science major from Rochester, N.Y., who will study in Japan; Emir Yilmaz, a cybersecurity major from Butler, N.J., who will study in Poland; Rafael Rutigliano, an industrial engineering major from Geneseo, N.Y., who will study in France; and Roan Everett John, a civil engineering technology major from Henrietta, N.Y., who will study in Japan.
