Winter Holiday Break Extension FAQs
Who is eligible for the January 2nd holiday?
Any full- or part-time regular employee who is scheduled to work on January 2, 2026 is eligible for the additional holiday.
Do I have to use it on January 2, 2026?
Yes. The only exception is for those exempt staff members required to work on January 2 (Workday project team, Public Safety, Residential Life, etc.). Exempt staff employees who are required to work on an RIT-observed holiday may take another day off during the fiscal year in exchange for the holiday worked, with advance supervisor approval. There is no additional pay.
I already have a vacation day scheduled for January 2nd; can I use a different day instead?
No. Employees with a scheduled vacation day should use this holiday extension day in lieu of vacation time.
What if my employee is not scheduled to work on this day?
If an employee was not scheduled to work on January 2, the supervisor or timekeeper should review the timesheet in Workday to confirm that no holiday hours were recorded. If holiday hours were prepopulated inaccurately in Workday, the supervisor or timekeeper should offset those prepopulated holiday hours by adding a time block and choosing the work code ‘Holiday Hours’ and entering a negative amount to offset the prepopulated holiday hours. For example, if 8 hours were prepopulated, the time block amount recorded should be -8.
How much time does a part-time employee receive for the holiday extension?
A part-time employee will receive prepopulated holiday time in Workday based on their regularly scheduled weekly hours divided by 5. For example, a staff member scheduled to work 25 hours/week will receive 5 hours of prepopulated holiday time in Workday. The holiday time approved should be reflective of the hours the employee would normally be scheduled to work. If the prepopulated holiday hours is not reflective of the normally scheduled hours for January 2nd, the supervisor or timekeeper will need to add a time block and choose the work code ‘Holiday Hours’ to enter or offset additional hours.
