Newsmakers are a quick and easy way to acknowledge the professional and academic accomplishments of RIT students, faculty, and staff, such as publishing an article in a scholarly journal, presenting research at a conference, serving on a panel discussion, earning a scholarship, or winning an award. Newsmakers appear in News and Events as well as the "In the News" section on faculty/staff directory profile pages.

    Michael Laver, professor of history and associate dean in the College of Liberal Arts, published a book titled The Dutch East India Company and Japan: Gift Giving and Diplomacy with Bloomsbury Press.

    John Capps, professor of philosophy, received an honorable mention in the American Association of Philosophy Teachers’ Lenssen Prize competition for his article, “The Case for Discussion-Intensive Pedagogy.” It was one of three articles to receive an honorable mention for the 2018-2019 period.

    Evelyn Brister, associate professor of philosophy, co-authored an article, “The Impact of Philosophy - And the Philosophy of Impact” in the Feb. 17 edition of 3 Quarks Daily.

    The College of Liberal Arts has joined the Central New York Humanities Corridor. The collaboration works to build bridges across member institutions to support activities in the humanities, enabling direct access to resources as well as humanities faculty and students who can network and collaborate on teaching and scholarship. Other member institutions include Syracuse University, Cornell University, University of Rochester, LeMoyne College and the New York Six Liberal Arts Consortium (Colgate, Hamilton, Hobart and William Smith, Skidmore, St. Lawrence, Union).

    Elisabetta D'Amanda, principal lecturer of Italian in the modern languages and cultures department, had her 2008 film, As Good As Bread, given an Award of Exceptional Merit in the Depth of Focus International Film Festival in January. She made the film as an MFA student at RIT and it continues to be shown in various Italian-American student programs.

    Jesse Redlo, adjunct faculty member in the School of Communication and the University Exploration program, successfully defended his dissertation on Jan. 14 to earn his Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree in leadership from the American College of Education.
