Threat Assessment and Management Services

Overview

Rochester Institute of Technology is committed to providing an environment that is safe and secure and one that promotes learning and productive employment. RIT does not tolerate violence of any type including expressed or implied threats of violence. Each member of the RIT community shares responsibility for creating and maintaining a civil and respectful workplace, free from all forms of threatening and violent behavior.

The Threat Assessment and Management Team is a multi-disciplinary group whose team members include representatives from Human Resources, Public Safety, Global Risk Management Services, Academic Affairs, the Office of Legal Affairs and a medical expert to assist the team on complex cases. The team develops and implements strategies and corrective action plans to address violent and/or threatening behaviors; and reassesses those strategies when appropriate.

Recognizing Concerning Behavior

Concerning behavior can take many forms and may develop over time. Potential warning signs may include:

  • Sudden changes in behavior, attitude, or interactions with others

  • Angry, hostile, or aggressive behavior

  • Actions that seem unsafe, unpredictable, or out of character

  • Pulling away from coworkers, friends, or workplace activities

  • Ongoing conflicts with coworkers, supervisors, or others

  • Concerning emails, messages, social media posts, or comments

  • Talking about getting even, seeking revenge, or harming others

  • Statements or actions that raise concerns about the safety of the individual or others
