“RESILIENCE,” a collaborative exhibition with work from 10 senior Photojournalism students at Rochester Institute of Technology, will be on display from March 4-14 at RIT City Art Space. Occupancy limits will be in place to ensure proper social distancing.

The exhibition is the culmination of the students’ year-long work on a documentary project that is judged in accordance with the highest photojournalistic standards. The “RESILIENCE” exhibition title was selected to express the ups and downs in the journey of the people documented and the students themselves, as they pushed through the unique challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In “RESILIENCE,” the 10 graduating students demonstrate the power of journalism to both educate and speak on the issues of today’s world. The stories share a common theme of keeping a fighting spirit alive during hard times, focusing on topics ranging from autism, life in a small town, farming and education during a pandemic to economic and racial inequality. The work is expressed primarily through photography and video storytelling, with the inclusion of design and written journalism highlighting the need for creative and adaptive storytelling during the age of the pandemic.

The exhibiting visual artists are: Cheyenne Boone, Nicholas Cornish, Jackie Diller, Jordan Himes, Eakin Howard, Samantha Oughton, Julia Popowych, Britney Strong, Jennie Thomas and Mariah Whitmoyer.

The group has planned an opening reception on Zoom from 4-5 p.m. Thursday, March 4. A student panel discussion about the process of realizing their capstone exhibition is also scheduled to be held via Zoom at 4 p.m. Friday, March 12.

RIT City Art Space is located at 280 East Main St. (Sibley Tower, first floor) in downtown Rochester N.Y. It is open to the public (masks required) Thursday through Sunday from 1-5 p.m. with extended hours on Fridays (1-9 p.m.) from March to May.
