Associate Professor Brian Tomaszewski is working to create interactive coronavirus maps that provide deeper insight into the spread of COVID-19 in the hope that the public can use these mapping tools to help fight the pandemic.

Students use ‘Minecraft’ to recreate a digital RIT campus
One brick at a time — that’s how members of RIT’s Electronic Gaming Society are building a digital version of the RIT campus in the video game Minecraft. As universities across the country closed their campuses due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many students went to Minecraft as a way to stay connected with their schools. The game allows multiple players to collaborate on building structures and designing landscapes, including recreating physical places.

Situations such as the coronavirus pandemic have heightened interest in the importance of disaster management and mitigation. At RIT, researchers have created two new serious games that could be used as important learning tools for solving these world problems.

RIT students create pinball machines for History and Design of Pinball course
As part of an interactive games and media course, 12 RIT students made cardboard and digital pinball machines designed around themes of their own choosing. For the final exam, students brought their creations to The Strong National Museum of Play and had visitors give their physical and virtual pinball machines a test drive.

RIT Esports wins Hearthstone Collegiate Championship
Students from RIT Esports bested more than 300 teams from across North America to win the 2019 Hearthstone Collegiate Championship Fall Finals on Dec. 14. The RIT student team took home the top trophy and $6,000 in scholarships for playing the digital card game Hearthstone.

Lost & Found: Order in the Court – the Party Game, which aims to promote and enhance the public understanding of religion and law, was nominated for a Spotlight Award in the Tabletop category of IndieCade, the premier event for independent games and is known as the Sundance Film Festival for video games.
