Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences Professor Linwei Wang was named the Bruce B. Bates Endowed Professor.

Linwei Wang has been named the Bruce B. Bates Endowed Professor at RIT. The honor was announced Nov. 6 during an installation ceremony at RIT’s Lobozzo Alumni House.

The appointment recognizes Wang’s leadership and research accomplishments in artificial intelligence (AI) and computational biomedicine, where she focuses on the area of non-invasive personalized healthcare. As leader of the Computational Biomedicine Laboratory, she is also a mentor for students and junior faculty.

Wang is a professor in the Department of Computing and Information Sciences Ph.D. in RIT’s Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences. She received a National Science Foundation (NSF) Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award in 2014 to develop a diagnostic system that helps solve cardiac rhythm disorders.

In 2019, Wang received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). The PECASE is the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government to outstanding scientists and engineers who are beginning their independent research careers and show exceptional promise for leadership in science and technology.

Wang was among the first group of students to earn a Ph.D. in computing and information sciences from RIT in 2009.

“Professor Wang is a great mentor to me, extremely helpful, and intellectually sharp with remarkable insights into approaching research problems," said Ruby Shrestha, a computing and information sciences Ph.D. student working with Wang. "Seeing her manage numerous responsibilities so well, within or outside the lab, is truly inspiring. I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to research under her guidance.”

Endowments create a source of funding in perpetuity that help support and retain cutting-edge, award-winning teaching and research faculty. These endowed professorships ensure that RIT students will continue to work alongside and learn from best-in-class researchers and educators.

RIT Trustee Emeritus Bruce B. Bates was a long-time friend and benefactor of the university. Bates was a member of the Board of Trustees beginning in 1970, serving as chairman from 1984 to 1987, and was the first recipient of RIT’s Lifetime Achievement in Philanthropy Award.
