Meet Anesa Colakovic (BSc ’13)

Anesa Colakovic

Anesa Colakovic has founded the Educational and Cultural Learning Center - Peacebuilding Library in Mitrovica.

Mitrovica has 38 schools with approximately 500-700 students per school and it did not have a Library for students. As the most regular reader chosen by the Staff of the Library, Anesa saw this issue as a moral duty to improve the conditions and create a space for youth to read write network and socialize.

With Dr. David Philips professor and director of Institute for Human Rights and Peacebuilding at Columbia University in New York, she initiated the project and received funding from the States to implement the idea.

“Now, Mitrovica has a modern space for group work meetings, readings, and writing assignments. What is more, the building has several more significant features. It is located next to the bridge of Mitrovica, which connects north and south Mitrovica, so the place will serve as an opportunity for peacebuilding as well. The building offers opportunities for recreational activities: indoor swimming, volleyball, basketball, gymnastics, football️, language courses center, and outdoor tennis court, park, and parking lot. I hope to create a multiplying effect so that each city/town in Kosovo has such an amazing opportunity for youth.”
