Tax

Overview

The Tax Department, a vital part of the Office of the Controller, ensures that RIT remains compliant with federal, state, local and international tax regulations. We are dedicated to developing and implementing policies that safeguard RIT’s tax-exempt status. Our team also provides guidance on tax-related issues to various departments across the university.

In order to achieve its mission, the Tax Department is organized into three primary functional areas of Income Tax, Payroll Tax, and Sales Tax. Each tax discipline has its own subject matter expert, who with the support of the department’s Executive Director and Controller’s Office leadership, serve the university at large.

Rochester Institute of Technology does not provide advice or render opinions on individual personal income tax matters. The information contained on this website is provided for general informational purposes only and is not intended to serve as individual personal income tax advice. Individuals seeking personal income tax advice or assistance are encouraged to consult with external tax advisors.

Tax in the RSC

The Tax Department has partnered with the RIT Service Center (RSC) to provide end users with tax information and requests directly in the RSC. Beginning September 2025, you will now be able to use the RSC interface to search and review Knowledge Articles, submit Requests, and Report an Issue / Ask a Question for tax related items. Additionally, RSC team members will be on call to assist and escalate tax questions and requests that originate in the RSC call center to the Tax Department.

Report an Issue / Ask a Question

If the Tax Department Knowledge Articles and Requests do not satisfy your inquiry, you are encouraged to open a ticket with the RSC via the Report an Issue / Ask a Question request form. You may also directly contact the RSC by phone at 585-475-5000 and speak with a representative.
