The New York Climate Exchange, a first-of-its-kind organization working to implement innovative climate solutions across the globe, has announced Stephen Hammer as its founding CEO. Hammer will lead a consortium of over 45 partner organizations, including RIT and other leading research universities, and multi-national companies, that are committed to solving the most pressing climate challenges of our time. 

A fruitful partnership between NTID and University of Rochester has earned a funding boost to help meet the long-term goals of the Bridges to the Doctorate for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Students program. A grant from the National Institutes of Health will help increase the number of deaf and hard-of-hearing students entering Ph.D. programs in biomedical science fields and the number of deaf and hard-of-hearing students who successfully earn Ph.D.’s in biomedical sciences.

The partnership will deepen the connection between RIT and Dolby, provide more training for faculty on the latest software and technology, and form a bridge for mentorship between RIT students and industry professionals working at Dolby.

RIT researcher Bolaji Thomas is leading a $650,000 study to compare the genetic response in cattle in sub-Saharan Africa to the parasitic disease Trypanosomiasis, or “sleeping sickness,” that attacks their blood and brain. As parasites adapt to a warming world, the biting fly that transmits Trypanosomiasis could someday migrate to northern climates.

The Remanufacturing Industries Council (RIC)-RIT World Remanufacturing Conference (WRC) will gather business leaders, innovators, policymakers, and other decision-makers Nov. 7-9 in Springfield, Mo., for the opportunity to discover how remanufacturing can support cleaner, more sustainable production.

The New York State Pollution Prevention Institute has announced selections for its 2023-2024 Community Grants Program. The program provides nonprofit organizations, academic institutions, and local governments both financial and technical assistance for projects that promote and implement pollution-prevention practices at the community level.

Students in RIT’s Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science participated in Industrial Associates at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center on Oct. 19. The event was a chance for students to connect with industry professionals and to hear about trends in the optics industry.

Nearly 300 people gathered on Friday evening at the beginning of Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend as RIT officials marked the successful conclusion of Transforming RIT: The Campaign for Greatness. RIT’s largest-ever fundraising campaign raised $1,059,581,463 to propel the university forward in its pursuits at the intersection of technology, the arts, and design.

RIT was recently awarded $2 million as part of the Biden Administration’s “Investing in America” program to focus on creating jobs in the high-demand areas of infrastructure and transportation.

Tom Connor, former vice president of creative marketing at Walt Disney Co., has been appointed assistant provost at RIT. In addition, Connor, an alumnus of RIT’s School of Film and Animation, has also been named the Paul and Francena Miller Chair in International Education and will serve as a professor of practice in RIT’s College of Art and Design.

RIT is receiving $500,000 from the Google Cybersecurity Clinics Fund to train new cybersecurity professionals, while providing services for public good at the same time. The funding from Google.org, the company’s philanthropic arm, is part of a $20 million collaboration with the Consortium of Cybersecurity Clinics that Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, announced in June.

Dozens of young scholars will convene at RIT next year as the university hosts the next a2ru Emerging Creatives Student Summit. The student participants will work in interdisciplinary teams from across the a2ru network to create arts-integrative projects responding to the theme “PLAY: The Impact of Play on How We Create and Relate to the World.”
