Awards

Outstanding Undergraduate Scholar Award

The Outstanding Undergraduate Scholar Award celebrates the top 1% of undergraduate students who achieve academic excellence while also giving back to the community through civic or volunteer work, by conducting research, or being engaged in a co-op or work in their field of study.

Criteria:

Undergraduate students at RIT who maintained a minimum grade point average of 3.85 out of a possible 4.0.
Completed 83 credit hours of study, more than two-thirds of the credit hours required for a baccalaureate degree.
Students are also selected based on other factors complementing academic achievement, such as creative work, service on student committees, civic activities, employment, and independent research.

Nomination Process

RIT's Registrar sends a list of the students who meet the award criteria to a committee in each college. The committee reviews each submission and selects the award recipients.

Awards Ceremony

The RIT Outstanding Undergraduate Scholars Awards will be held on Thursday, March 26, 2026 at 5:00p.m. This event recognizes the top one percent of RIT students each year. Students awarded with this distinction have completed at least 83 credit hours of study and have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.85 for university work completed as of last year’s spring term. The event includes an awards ceremony and reception (immediately following). Both the awards ceremony and the reception will be held in the Gordon Field House and Activities Center on the RIT campus.

History

Since 1976, RIT has honored the top 1% of students who are able to maintain a record of academic excellence while also giving back to their community through civic or volunteer work, conducting research, or being engaged in co-op or work in their field of study.

RIT is pleased to pay tribute to these undergraduates who have demonstrated devotion to excellence is an inspiration to the university community.

Medallion

The bronze medallion awarded to RIT Scholars was designed by the late professor Hans Christensen, renowned silversmith and first holder of the Charlotte Fredericks Mowris Chair in Contemporary Crafts in the School for American Crafts. Professor Christensen was the youthful recipient of two medallions for excellence in silver design and execution from the King of Denmark. His memory of this special event in his own life became the genesis for RIT's bronze medallion.

Professor Christensen chose traditional symbols for wisdom and respect—the Athenian owl and the olive branch—as images for the medallion. Each student attending the ceremony receives their medallion from the President, who personally acknowledges their academic excellence.

Student Leadership Awards

The Student Leadership Awards honor the best of RIT’s student body, highlighting recipients’ dedication to engagement, service, and leadership. These awards include Community Impact Awards, Excellence in Student Life awards, and Legacy Leader awards.

Community Impact Awards

Community Impact Awards are presented to undergraduate students who are recognized as “change-makers” on the RIT campus. Awardees are selected based on their engagement in and contributions to the RIT community. Various scholarships are available, ranging from $500 to $5,000.

Excellence in Student Life Awards

Since 1964, Excellence in Student Life Awards have honored undergraduate students who balance academic success and engagement. Students with a 3.4 GPA or higher are invited to apply for this award and must demonstrate significant leadership in RIT-related activities.

Legacy Leaders

Legacy Leader Awards recognize graduating students who have used their leadership roles to amplify the success of women and nonbinary individuals, leaving a lasting impact at RIT or in the greater Rochester community.

How to Apply

Student Leadership Awards

Applications for the Student Leadership Awards are now open for the 2025-2026 academic year:

Excellence in Student Life: Those eligible for this award based on their GPA (3.4 or higher) will be invited to apply via email at the beginning of the spring semester. Applications will be available via the myLife portal.
- Applications close Friday, Feb. 6.
Community Impact Awards and Legacy Leaders: Students may apply for the Legacy Leaders Award and various Community Impact Awards via the myLife portal under Awards/Volunteer.
- Community Impact Awards: Applications close Sunday, Feb. 15.
- Legacy Leader Awards: Applications close Friday, Feb. 13.

Outstanding Service Award for International Students

Faculty, staff, and students may nominate a full-time undergraduate or graduate international student located at RIT’s main Rochester campus. Self-nominations are not accepted. Nominations for the 2025-2026 academic year open Monday, Jan. 19 at 8 a.m. and close on Monday, Feb. 16.

Community Impact Awards and Legacy Leaders

Community Impact Award scholarships range from $500 to $5,000 for leadership, making improvements to the campus, or being involved in club activities. These awards are a way to recognize and appreciate the “change makers” on the RIT campus. The awards are administered or selected by the Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement unless otherwise mentioned.

Outstanding Service Award for International Students

This award recognizes international students who have made special contributions to life at RIT and the greater Rochester community, including superior service and effort in academics, student clubs and organizations, and external community groups. Full-time undergraduate and graduate international students at RIT’s main campus are eligible for this award.

RIT Kosovo (A.U.K) offers an American degree with innovation, adaptability and creative pathways that prepare students with professional and life skills for a global world. The Rochester Institute of Technology, RIT Kosovo (A.U.K)’s degree granting partner, offers students the opportunity to create undergraduate programs from two or more professional areas of study with a strong foundation in the social sciences, through RIT’s innovative School of Individualized Study.

Students at RIT Kosovo can earn a two-year Associate in Applied Science Degree; a four-year Bachelor of Science in Individualized Program Degree; and a Master of Science in Professional Studies from the School of Individualized Study RIT or a Bachelor of Science in Computing and Information Technologies at our location in Kosovo. In our degree programs, students work closely with faculty and professional advisers to design unique, multidisciplinary plans of study that combine several areas of academic knowledge and interests. The Individualized program is particularly appropriate for individuals who want to prepare themselves for a career that requires skills and expertise from several disciplines.

This blended learning environment provides a strong base for students in Kosovo, the region and around the world to learn and practice critical thinking, leadership and communications skills across disciplines while gaining the technical knowledge in the areas of professional study that best suit the individual. In addition to those professional Sub-Plans offered in Kosovo students may elect to do a semester or year abroad at the Rochester campus or other global campuses to complete coursework not offered at this location.
