Bio

Dr. Stephen Aldersley has degrees in Linguistics, Education, Special Education and a doctorate in Higher Education Administration. He joined the English department faculty of the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in 1980, and served as chair of that department from 1991-2005 and as chair of NTID’s Department of Liberal Studies from 2005-2008. From 1995-2008, he served as an Impartial Hearing Officer for the State of New York, hearing and rendering judgment on K-12 special education cases. From 2013-2017, he was NTID’s Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs with responsibility for the faculty and academic programs of the college. After a sabbatical in 2017/18, he accepted a joint appointment in RIT’s School of Individualized Study and for two years, served as the Paul A. Miller Chair of International Education.
 

His scholarship includes studies of reading instruction, programmatic success, changes in institutional status, history of deaf education organizations, predicting student success, judicial interpretation of the least restrictive environment clause and, latterly, the academic chairmanship.

A capstone class for students in the applied arts and sciences bachelor of science degree program. Course provides students an opportunity to reflect upon and enhance the many aspects of their individualized educational programs and focus on future goals.
