Research: Currently, my work is focused on two dual oriented lipoproteins from the pathogenic bacteria nontypable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) and Escherichia coli (E. coli). P6 from NTHi is a leading vaccine candidate for protection against otitis media (ear infections), sinusitis, and acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis in children and adults. Pal from E. coli is currently being investigated for its role in the clinical condition of sepsis. The Michel lab uses a variety of biophysical and biochemical techniques to better understand how the two proteins are dual oriented and the biological significance of lipoprotein dual orientation.
