The American School for the Deaf (ASD) is the oldest school for the deaf,
founded in 1817 by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc. The American
School for the Deaf is committed to serving deaf and hard of hearing infants,
youth and their families in development of intellect and the enhancement of
quality of life utilizing specially designed instruction through an American
Sign Language and English Bilingual Approach, empowering them to become
educated and self-directed life-long learners.  ASD is accredited through the
New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), as well as the
Conference of Educational Administrators of School Programs for the Deaf
(CEASD).
ASD is located in West Hartford, a town recognized as one of the top ten
towns for raising families. West Hartford residents value education,
evidenced by the high quality of public and private schools.  There is also
much to do in West Hartford.  There is a wide array of parks and recreation.
There are pools and hiking trails.  There are historic sites to visit as
well.  If shopping is on the list then Blue Back Square, located in the
center of town, offers many retail stores and a variety of restaurants to
satisfy everyone.
SCOPE OF DUTIES:
Under the direction of the Human Resources Manager, the Employment Specialist
is primarily responsible for the onboarding function at the American School
for the Deaf.  This position collaborates closely with the Human Resources
Generalist regarding the recruitment of new employees and lends their
expertise and assistance in the interview process.  The Employment Specialist
is responsible for DCF and State Department of Education file reviews, is
responsible for securing and housing all Criminal History Record Information
(CHRI) as well as other duties as assigned by the Human Resource Manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
• Manage the onboarding process of new staff; including but not limited to
writing offer letters, processing required paperwork, completion of
background checks, processing State and FBI fingerprint backgrounds, and
ensuring completion of required physical
• Responsible for onboarding additional staff such as Student Teachers,
Interns, Seasonal and Camp IB Staff, and Volunteers
• Create files for new employees, and ensures that all required paperwork
including mandatory training is included; responsible for reference checks
• Write job descriptions and create job postings for new positions.
• Collaborate with Human Resource Generalist regarding recruiting qualified
applicants. Assist with posting positions on ASD Website as well as Indeed
• Correspond with prospective new hires, participate in the interview
process as required
• Participate in new hire orientation, set up training for new staff,
coordinate mobile fingerprint unit
• Demonstrate understanding of union contracts related to all employment
matters; effectively communicate interpretation of contracts to employees
• Track all transfer requests and collaborate with Administration, notify
appropriate personnel/staff regarding transfers to ensure a smooth transition
• Collaborate with school administrators regarding Student Teacher and
Intern applicants and placements as well as Volunteer applicants and
placements.
• Conducts comparative salary studies for categories of employees specified
by the Human Resources Manager.
• Responsible for regular Personnel File Reviews for audit by various state
agencies
• Responsible for Human Resources portion of the re-licensing of school
programs
• Responsible for CHRI and the management of documentation
• Coordinate the CEASD certification process for Residential Counseling
staff
• Develops and maintains a working relationship with other school
departments and is sensitive to current school-wide issues and trends.
• Functions as an effective member of the Human Resources Department.
• Other related duties as assigned

Requirements:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
• Bachelor's degree preferred
• Minimum of three years of human resources experience, with direct
responsibility for recruiting and onboarding.
• Experience with ADP Workforce Now strongly preferred.
• Must possess sign language skills, or be willing to learn.
• Experience in an Education and/or Union environment is a plus
