Family Outreach Advocate

Position: Family Outreach Advocate Classification: Non-exempt
Supervisor: Regional Director, OC DEAF FTE: 100%
Location: Cypress, CA Division: OC DEAF

Under the supervision of the Regional Director, the Family Outreach Advocate will:
1. Contact first responders and colleges to offer Deafness 101 and/or sensitivity trainings on how to communicate with deaf, hard of hearing, deaf-blind and deaf-disabled individuals
2. Create OCDEAF vlogs on topics related to disasters, important news, announcements, and events/workshops
3. Add captions to vlog videos using editing program
4. Coordinate ASL classes at OCDEAF and area schools
5. Provide presentations to deaf clubs and at deaf events
6. Work closely with GLAD Community Outreach advocates and directors to keep the community well informed about our services
7. Contact companies using TTY equipment and talk with them about diminishing the use of TTY’s and work with them how to make their agencies accessible to incoming calls using VRS and/or VRI
8. Travel within agency service area for fieldwork
9. Perform such tasks and responsibilities as may be delegated.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. B.A. degree OR 3 years’ experience in Community Outreach and/or Community Education desired
2. Fluency in American Sign Language
3. Experience with public presentations
4. Able to work with deaf, hard of hearing, deaf-blind persons of diverse multi-ethnic population and with widely varying communication skills and language levels
5. Knowledge of laws governing the rights of deaf and hard of hearing individuals is desirable
6. Exhibit excellent interpersonal skills and be capable of maintaining a cooperative relationship with employees, supervisors, consumers, state and local governments and community members
7. Excellent verbal and written communication skills; be detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
8. Ability to maintain confidentiality
9. Take initiative and thrive in handling multiple tasks with competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment
10. Be able to travel within entire service area
