Deaf Peer Support Specialist-

The Deaf Peer Support Specialist may be a Certified Peer Specialist, a Certified Addiction Recovery Coach, or a Family Partner. This position is designated for a person who identifies as having lived experience relevant to their certification and is willing to shares that experience for the benefit of the people they support and helps others to access resources and supports that will allow them full access to the community of their choice. The Deaf Peer Support Specialist reports to the Director of Recovery or the Assistant Director of Recovery.

Job Description:
*Engage in non-judgmental, compassionate, active listening to build one-on-one connections with persons served that support a person’s preferences and emphasize the tenets of recovery.
Support persons to access groups and activities in ASL or have adequate interpretation services to fully promote inclusion and access.
*Provide direct support through the benefit of mutuality to people in the community and GLE settings in the areas of community inclusion, relationship building, housing, risk mitigation, transportation, skill-building, money management, medication needs/preferences and other areas based on the person centered treatment plan.
*Support other Deaf and Hard of Hearing persons to live a life of their choosing by accessing resources, community, adaptive accommodations and equipment, and education that will allow them to live a life of their choosing.
*Actively participate in North Suffolk peer team membership through recovery events, RLC bridging opportunities, peer mentorship, and peer team meetings to actively promote community and to model that community to other staff and persons served as a necessary component of Recovery.
*Develop and implement Safety Plans and Crisis Prevention and Response Plans in order to best mitigate risk and support self-determination of the person.

Education: High School Diploma/GED equivalent required. Bachelors Degree highly preferred. Must possess or be willing/eligible to obtain one of the following Certifications within the first six months of employment:
Certified Peer Specialist (CPS), Certified Addiction Recovery Coach (CARC) within 6 months of hire or Family Partner

Experience: Must identify as having Lived Experience of a Mental Health Diagnosis, a Substance Use Addiction, Extreme States, or Trauma that has caused significant life disruption and possess a desire to share those experiences in a purposeful and intentional way to influence the mental health system and provide recovery oriented support to those in ACCS services. Must identify as personally being deaf and/or hard of hearing, or be fluent in ASL.

Skills: Driver’s license preferred but not required. Must be CPR/first aid certified within three months of hire (training provided)
