Submit an ASL/Spoken Video Sample

Video Submission Requirement

Thank you for your interest in the American Sign Language–English Interpretation program. To complete your application, you must submit one video that includes both:

  • Part 1: ASL Language Sample
  • Part 2: Spoken English Responses

After recording your video, upload it to YouTube and provide the URL using one of the following methods. Password-protected URLs will not be accepted.

  • Post the YouTube video URL in the appropriate field within the online application.
  • Common App applicants will receive access to the RIT Portal after submitting their Common App application. Within the portal, applicants can submit their video URL and other required materials.
  • Email the YouTube video URL to NTIDAdmissions@rit.edu.

Video Format

Please submit one video containing both the ASL and spoken English portions.

Begin with the ASL Language Sample described below. After completing the ASL portion, turn on your microphone and continue with the Spoken English Responses. You may pause briefly between sections if needed, but both portions must be submitted together as a single video.

The video helps us assess your ASL skills, spoken English communication skills, and your ability to organize and express ideas effectively.

Part 1: ASL Language Sample

Please answer the following questions using your best ASL skills. Do not rehearse. We want a natural sample of your signing. You may use notes, but do not read directly from them while signing.

The ASL portion should normally not exceed 10 minutes.

ASL Prompts

  1. Describe your family, including names and ages, and where you live.
  2. Imagine you are sitting in the chair on the left side of the room pictured below. Describe the furniture and objects from where you are sitting.
  3. Describe the mug below, including its shape, texture, and color.
  4. Share an unforgettable incident you have experienced.
  5. Describe the ASL courses you have taken in the past. What ASL courses are you taking now and plan to take before August?

Part 2: Spoken English Responses

After completing the ASL portion, respond to the following prompts in spoken English while looking directly at the camera.

Please answer naturally and conversationally. Do not read from a script. You may use notes, but do not read directly from them.

Share an unforgettable moment you've experienced. What happened, and why has it stayed with you?

2. Your ASL Journey

Tell us, in spoken English, about your journey with ASL. What have you learned so far? What has been challenging or exciting? What are you looking forward to?

Video Recording Guidelines

  • Wear a solid-colored shirt or top (no designs, lettering, stripes, or plaids).
  • Wear clothing that contrasts with your skin tone.
  • Remove rings and distracting jewelry, including facial and tongue piercings.
  • Hair should be away from your face. Mustaches and beards should be neatly trimmed.
  • Avoid dark or brightly colored nail polish, as it can make signs and fingerspelling difficult to read.
  • Record in a quiet location with good lighting.
  • Use a solid-colored background.
  • Position the camera so you are visible from the hips to slightly above the top of your head.
  • Ensure your facial expressions, fingerspelling, and signs are clearly visible.
  • Stay within the frame and avoid excessive movement during recording.
  • Begin recording and wait approximately five seconds before starting.
  • Start your ASL portion by signing your first and last name.
  • For the spoken English portion, ensure your microphone is turned on and your voice can be heard clearly.
