This May, the deaf 𝑥 lab will host a visit from Dr. Mark Fletcher of the Institute for Sound and Vibration Research at the University of Southampton in the UK. Dr. Fletcher has developed a vibrotactile wristband that converts auditory speech into a series of mechanical pulses that can be detected on the wearer’s wrist. Dr. Fletcher will be working with the deaf xl ab and colleagues at URMC on a project to further understand the brain mechanisms behind how such devices support spoken language comprehension in typical listeners and users of cochlear implants.
