Sign Language Proficiency Interview in American Sign Language (SLPI:ASL)
- RIT/
- NSLARC
Offered by the NTID Sign Language Assessment and Resource Center (NSLARC)
The NTID Sign Language Assessment and Resource Center (NSLARC) offers the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI:ASL) as part of our national assessment services. The SLPI:ASL is a one-on-one conversational interview conducted in American Sign Language, designed to evaluate a candidate’s ability to use natural sign language for functional communication. It also analyzes sign language form, including vocabulary, production, fluency, grammar, and comprehension skills.
The SLPI:ASL was originally adapted by Bill Newell and Frank Caccamise from the Language/Oral Proficiency Interview (L/OPI), widely used to assess spoken languages. Today, the SLPI model is used to assess sign language proficiency across the globe, including in Kenya (SLPI:KSL), South Africa (SLPI:SASL), and New Zealand (SLPI:NZSL).
Interview Format and Process
- The SLPI:ASL is conducted remotely via Zoom.
- Candidates will receive a secure email link for their interview session. No Zoom account is required.
- Interview topics may include personal background, professional duties, educational experiences, and areas of interest.
- Each interview is recorded and rated independently by certified NSLARC SLPI:ASL raters.
- Results are evaluated using the SLPI:ASL Rating Scale, which is based on the communication behaviors of highly skilled native/native-like signers.
The SLPI:ASL is recognized by both the National Seal of Biliteracy and the New York State Seal of Biliteracy as an accepted assessment of language proficiency.
