From the NTID President's Office - April 2023

April 2023

Welcome to the April 2023 edition of From the NTID President’s Office. We are in the final stretch towards the end of the semester and commencement. It has already been a year of students and faculty in classrooms, workshops, athletic competitions, performing and visual arts, busy eating areas, and long lines for coffee at The Grind. In other words, back to the way we all remember our campus life before the pandemic.

You all have my sincere thanks for ensuring our campus community continues to run smoothly for another successful year.

Enrollment and Admissions news

Submitted by Rick Postl

Admissions is working with the bulk of admitted students towards their enrollment decision. Admitted Regular Decision students received their financial aid packages in early March, and are becoming more inquisitive with the May 1 enrollment deadline looming. As of March 1, we have admitted 336 students and are within the averages for the past five years. Work continues with prospective students who still are working on their applications, and reaching out to those who have yet to learn about RIT. There also are students who are just beginning to think about life after high school, and we are looking to capture their attention. There will be a number of open house and campus visitors in the coming months. Be sure to say hello to our campus guests and let them know they will be joining an outstanding community.

Three questions with Jason Listman, associate professor, American Sign Language-English Interpretation Department

What is the best part of your job?

Building relationships with my students and making a difference in their education. Being challenged by my students is also the best part of my job because they are also my teachers.

What would surprise people to know about you?

Two things came to my mind that people often react in surprise to learn. One, I used to play basketball when I was younger. The second one is I once aspired to become a therapist and was admitted to a Ph.D. program in clinical psychology before I changed my career to ASL teacher.

What do you enjoy doing on your time off?

I love cooking! It’s therapeutic. I’m a big follower of Tieghan, Half Baked Harvest, an online blog. I highly recommend checking her recipes out. Be prepared to have to stock up on your spices more often. I also enjoy gardening on my time off and being present with nature.

Three questions with Anna Nack, biomedical engineering major from Sterling, Virginia

What is the best part about your major?

The best part of this major is learning from my mistakes and how it helps me work on reaching my goals. Biomedical engineering is a rigorous major, requiring a lot of discipline and effort to succeed. It helps me build more vital skills to advocate for myself and utilize the available resources.

What is something that would surprise people to know about you?

People would be surprised that I surfed when I was nine and didn't wear my hearing aids.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I like to hang out with my friends and binge-watch Netflix. I also enjoy playing basketball, swimming, and exercising, like running on a track or working with weightlifting machines.
