Starting graduate school can feel like a daunting task. Meeting new people and professors is overwhelming, and that's before you even begin your coursework. I reached out to fellow graduate students to compile a helpful list of tips and advice to make your transition into graduate school a bit smoother. Here are some things to keep in mind!
Embrace a Growth Mindset
Graduate school is designed to push you in new directions. Don't be afraid to try different approaches and explore materials outside your comfort zone. The experiences that happen when you step beyond familiar territory are invaluable to your graduate school journey and create moments of growth that lead to new ideas.
Failing is Good
Graduate school is the perfect space to try something new and fail spectacularly. The faculty and students here at RIT are here to help you work through ideas—even the ones that don't pan out. You can learn a lot by doing something the right way, but you may discover something entirely new when things go wrong.
Be Proactive and Organized
Keeping a tidy and accessible workspace is key to establishing healthy studio habits. This principle also applies to maintaining assignments and deadlines in a digital or physical calendar. Set realistic goals for yourself and break larger projects into smaller, manageable tasks. Keep a comprehensive list of important dates and deadlines, including class enrollment dates, thesis submission deadlines, and department meetings.
Put Yourself Out There
One of the most valuable aspects of graduate school is the connections you make with others. Find people you can discuss your work with—people who will push you toward your goals. Reach out to individuals you can talk to outside the studio as well. What happens outside the studio is just as important as what happens inside it. Joining a club or organization can make the transition into graduate school much smoother. Building relationships will help you navigate difficult days and provide people to celebrate with during your successes.
Remember to Have Fun
This is a unique and exciting time in your artistic and academic development. Embrace the challenges and celebrate your successes! It's easy to become fixated on everything that isn't working in your artistic practice. Remember to acknowledge and celebrate the things that are going well.
