32 Years of the RIT Big Shot
The RIT Big Shot, the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences-led nighttime community photographic project, debuted Dec. 4, 1987, and is still going strong. The idea — proposed by professors Michael Peres, William DuBois and Dawn Tower DuBois — was to use a painting with light exercise as a useful tool for community building for the biomedical photographic communications program. They could have never fully imagined where their little experiment would take them during the course of three decades. The Big Shot engages student and community volunteers to provide the primary light source of a landmark while RIT photographers shoot an extended exposure. Big Shot subjects have included Churchill Downs, the Dallas Cowboys' home stadium, the Royal Palace in Stockholm, Sweden, and most recenty, Old Fort Niagara in 2018. A presentation during Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend will share Big Shot stories and highlights from the 33 projects that have been produced in the U.S. and abroad. There are two chances to catch the presentation on Saturday, Oct. 19: 10 to 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. They are being held in the Harris Conference Room (Gannett Hall, 2155)
