Abstract:
Science is often a journey shaped by curiosity and the willingness to explore new territories—sometimes without knowing exactly where you’re headed. My own path to astrophysics began long before I found myself studying the distant universe at Space Telescope Science Institute. As a young student with a deep love for science but no clear sense of direction, I followed my curiosity through various degrees, from the chem lab to aerospace engineering to astrophysics. Each detour uncovered new passions and skills that ultimately guided me to the work I do today. In this talk, I will share how embracing my curiosity, following the data, and trusting the process led me to the fascinating world of space science. I will discuss both my past and current projects, including the Public Observation Pure Parallel Infrared Survey (POPPIES) and Next Generation DEEP Field (NGDEEP) emission line surveys with JWST, highlighting how the diverse skills acquired along my journey have uniquely positioned me to contribute to these cutting-edge astronomical investigations.
Bio:
Dr. Brittany N. Vanderhoof is a postdoctoral researcher at Space Telescope Science Institute. She is currently leading the data reduction for the POPPIES pure-parallel JWST NIRCam survey. She specializes in slit and grism spectroscopy, using a combination of emission-line diagnostics and photoionization modeling to study the physical and chemical properties of star forming galaxies and their interstellar medium from cosmic noon to cosmic dawn.
Intended Audience:
Beginners, undergraduates, graduates. Those with interest in the topic.
