Abstract
:

From darkrooms and backyard sheds, Caffenol's story is a testament to cross-disciplinary innovation between arts and sciences. Three decades ago at RIT, what started as a simple laboratory class project for photographers has since evolved into a global movement for sustainable, plant-based chemical development. This presentation traces Caffenol's remarkable journey, bridging its practical application in black-and-white and color still and motion photography with underlying chemical principles that make it so effective. Caffenol-developed film and prints have unique aesthetic qualities, from fine grain to distinct tonality, and Caffenol's role in demystifying photographic chemistry is also explored. This presentation also delves into mechanisms behind Caffenol's performance, analyzing synergistic reducing action of caffeic acid and ascorbic acid and its implications for green chemistry. This grassroots discovery and rapid adoption demonstrated viability of plant-based developers, spurring creation of more advanced formulas and accelerating global shift toward eco-friendly photographic practices. Caffenol's elegant chemical synergy serves as a potent case study, revealing how simple plant-based molecules can catalyze a paradigm shift towards sustainable, accessible chemical processes.
