Chemistry and Materials Science Seminar: Promoting Computational Literacy in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology Education
Chemistry and Materials Science Seminar
Promoting Computational Literacy in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology Education

Professor, School of Chemistry and Materials Science
Rochester Institute of Technology
Event Details:
A team of faculty members from four institutions (James Madison University, Penn State, RIT, Wabash College) is creating a series of workshops designed to help chemistry and biology faculty members get started with coding in their teaching and research. The goals of our project are
* To identify the computational literacy needs of the BMB community and develop workshop materials and coding exercises;
* To deliver virtual workshops that prepare faculty to incorporate computation into their courses; and
* To assess faculty learning from computational workshops and use of computation in BMB courses.
We are planning a four-hour workshop on April 30, a two-day workshop on May 19 & 21, and full-day workshop at the BCCE in late July, 2026. This presentation will include a 20-minute summary of the project, a hands-on demonstration using Google Colab for coding with Python, and a discussion of Python resources that extend beyond biochemistry and molecular biology to include other subdisciplines of chemistry as well as materials science.
