Chemistry and Materials Science Seminar
Python Scripting and Data for Chemistry and Biochemistry

Dr. Paul Craig

Professor, Biochemistry and Bioinformatics
Rochester Institute of Technology

Event Details:
Computers are an integral part of teaching and research in chemistry and biochemistry. We and our students use SciFinder, ChemDraw, Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint every day to collect, analyze and visualize our data and to communicate our findings with our peers. Following a professional leave at the Molecular Sciences Software Institute, Python scripting has become a primary focus in my research group and I am joining other biochemists and molecular biologists in building PyBMB, Python Scripting for Biochemistry & Molecular Biology.
In this seminar, you will learn about why you should consider learning about Python scripting and introduce it to your students how you can get started the broader array of open-access resources and libraries that are available for scientific computation opportunities to learn more about Python scripting for chemistry and biochemistry how we are using Python libraries to make advanced searches of the Protein Data Bank accessible to the broader community. It is my hope that this seminar will lead to future conversations that provide wonderful opportunities for students and faculty in SCMS and COS.

Abstract:
Dr. Paul Craig received his B.S. in Chemistry from Oral Roberts University in 1979, and his Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry from The University of Michigan in 1985. Following a post-doc at Henry Ford Hospital (biophysical chemistry of blood clotting; 1985-1988), he spent five years as an analytical biochemistry at BioQuant, Inc., in Ann Arbor, Michigan before joining RIT in 1993.
