Abstract:
With the legalization of Hemp by the 2018 Farm Bill and the recent proliferation of state regulated Cannabis markets, consumer access to Cannabis and Cannabis derived products has increased substantially in the United States. Without an overarching Federal regulatory scheme however, a patchwork of state regulations has emerged, with little consensus on what to regulate and what constitutes acceptable consumer exposure limits. We have documented 1) the elemental composition and sources of contamination of Commercial Hemp intended for CBD production/smoking, 2) the common occurrence of microplastic fibers in Cannabis flower, and 3) the composition of unregulated smoking papers, where the use of metal containing pigments and polymer components is widespread. The results of these findings and their potential implications for consumer exposure risks will be discussed.
Bio:
Derek Wright is a Professor of Environmental Science at Lake Superior State University in Sault Sainte Marie, MI, and is Facility Coordinator of the Micro Analysis and Spectroscopic Characterization Lab. He received his Ph.D. in 2008 form Rutgers University, where his research focused on the fate, transport, and bioaccumulation of trace elements in marine ecosystems. His current research focuses on environmental health and contaminant bioaccumulation utilizing a combination of mass spectrometry, spectroscopy, microscopy, and molecular techniques.
