About this event:
Thanks to a $1M collaborative grant from the National Science Foundation, RIT will be able to expand the PEER field school model to hundreds of emerging education researchers, including the U.S. Virgin Islands for the first time. Hear from the Principal Investigator on this project, and developer of the PEER field school model, RIT's Dr. Scott Franklin alongside his collaborators on the project, Dr. Eleanor C. Sayre and Dr. Mary Bridget Kustusch.

Full Abstract:
School of Physics and Astronomy faculty Scott Franklin has developed a national model for training and developing graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and “boundary-crossing” faculty in discipline-based education research (DBER). The model emphasizes collaborative, qualitative education research and has resulted in publications and presentations from participants around the world. In this webinar he will share how, with collaborators at Kansas State and DePaul, he developed the PEER model, its various implementations, and a new $1 million NSF award to develop the Institute in Research Methods for Professional Development for Emerging Education Researcher (PEER) Field Schools. The Institute will engage more than 750 emerging education researchers in foundational, peer-reviewed DBER and open up world-wide collaboration opportunities for RIT faculty interested in pursuing this type of research.

Speaker Bios:
Dr. Scott Franklin
Dr. Scott Franklin is the Director of the Center for Advancing STEM Teaching, Learning & Evaluation (CASTLE) and a professor in the School of Physics and Astronomy at RIT. Dr. Franklin studies geometrically cohesive granular materials, a particular form of soft matter that shows dramatic entanglement. He is also interested in the dynamics of student learning in physics, as well as how physicists associate meaning with mathematical expressions.

Dr. Eleanor C. Sayre
Dr. Eleanor Sayre is a professor of Physics at Kansas State University, partner at the Alder Science Education Association (AlderSEA) and co-Director of the Professional development for Emerging Education Researchers (PEER) program. Dr. Sayre has over 80 peer-reviewed publications in discipline-based education research. Among other topics, she conducts research into effective professional development for university faculty, linking models of faculty motivation to their practices in the classroom.

Dr. Mary Bridget Kustusch
Dr. Mary Bridget Kustusch is an associate professor in the College of Science and Health at DePaul University. Dr. Kustusch's scholarly work is in the area of Physics Education Research (PER). She has conducted qualitative and mixed methods research on topics such as the intersection between mathematics and physics, the development of student agency in the classroom, and equity in small group interactions. As a co-director of the Professional development for Emerging Education Research (PEER) program, she has developed and conducted numerous field schools on education research.
